Representatives from various institutions related to energy have provided suggestions for the further improvement on the quality and standard of recently developed Nepal Energy Information System (NEIS). During the stakeholders’ workshop organized in Kathmandu on 25 October 2013, the participants reviewed the attributes of the web portal of the system and discussed on the roles and responsibilities for managing the system, including mechanisms to facilitate for rapid collection, processing and dissemination of energy data and information to users at national and international level. As the sustainbility of NEIS depends highly on the quality of the data and information provided to the system, the participants also agreed on the process that would ensure keeping the NEIS up-to-date with quality and reliable data and information under Water and Energy Commission Secretariat (WECS), the lead agency of the system.
Establishment of NEIS is supported by Nepal Energy Efficiency Programme (NEEP) under its component one: Polcy Advice. NEEP provides technical assistance for the establishment of the system with objective to manage and make energy related data easily accessible. The Nepali – German programme NEEP is executed by WECS and supported by German Development Cooperation – GIZ on behalf of Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
NEIS is envisaged as an important element of a comprehensive energy database and management system that will support in managing and making energy related data easily accessible for analysis and decision making in energy related initiatives. The system desgined to act as central hub of energy will gather and store a considerable amount of energy related data and information, organize it logically and make it accessible with limited effort within reasonable response time. The system will consist up-to-date data and information on energy supply, demand/ consumption, demand and supply balance, cost/price, energy trade, energy efficiency and environment, energy policy, stakeholders, programmes and projects. it incorporates a software, data acquisition hardware, and communication systems that stores, analyzes, and display energy data and information.
